Online retail has wholly transformed since we first started building e-commerce sites in 1998.
Technological change – not least, having higher speeds – has meant simple transactional sites have become ever more advanced. Thumbnail photos have morphed into a series of shots from every angle, sometimes accompanied by video or apps that let you ‘try before you buy’.
Reviews, sourced from a trusted third party, are common, along with social feeds, and powerful search functionality is now the norm. The transaction process itself is increasingly secure, with dedicated payment pages featuring 3D Secure and fraud screening.
These changes in technology are accompanied by changes in user expectations, particularly around speed, responsiveness and accuracy of stock checks. Many older sites are creaking at the seams, ill-equipped to deal with the transaction volumes they now face or the number of products that the business wants to sell.
Throughout this evolution, we’ve continued to build commerce sites that tackle these issues. We’ve increased scale, built in new functionality, integrated with back-office systems and improved designs. Above all, we’ve ensured sites are reliable and easy to use.

We’ve examined the standard platforms available to businesses and found them lacking in crucial functionality or components, so we developed our own using Laravel.
GetCandy is now viewed by many developers as the go-to open source platform for scalable e-commerce solutions, offering APIs, connectors and plugins that cover all the core tasks of an online store. We use it regularly to provide the underlying coding for the commerce sites we design – accelerating development.
But effective e-commerce is only partly about the code. It also requires an understanding of user journeys – driving customers through from browsing to buying. Sites need to match the wider brand and, where appropriate, the in-store experience. And the purchase engine itself needs to be part of a wider online sales and marketing strategy. We can help in all these areas.
We’ll work with you to scope the site, incorporate key tools and make it look the part. And we can advise on, and help you implement, email marketing and SEO to drive traffic and sales. Online retail has transformed since we first started building e-commerce sites in 1998, but so have our solutions.
